Natural Resource Professionals (NatResPro) offer specialist well design consulting.
We’re a drilling engineering advisory with an experience legacy spanning three decades. We’re aware of the silo mentality that is all too often associated with specialists from an underbalanced or managed pressure drilling background.
Technology needs to be complementary and integrated to be successful. Mission accomplishment can only be achieved after successful well delivery, in terms of meeting engineering, economic and HSE objectives.
Experience teaches that working in multi-disciplinary teams with a single set of goals & objectives is the only reliable method of achieving success.
Technological implementation is very often regionally accented. Just because a certain practice worked elsewhere, it doesn’t guarantee that it can be automatically duplicated in another geological basin thousands of miles away.
Understanding the complex web of well design is paramount to any successful well delivery programme. Well construction techniques can be replicated in different fields, under different geological conditions, with different human interfaces.
Comprehending underlying differences, and similarities should be a core process in the transfer of any technology.
An experienced well design Engineer will understand the differences in tubing design and over or under designed wells.
Just because something worked in, for example, a depleted oil field in the North Sea, is not sufficient justification for a similar success in an abnormal gas field in the Middle East. Aside from the obvious geographical and reservoir differences, the two regions operate at a very different cultural perspective.
The NatResPro Drilling Engineering Advisory specialises in adopting and encouraging a holistic approach to well design & delivery.
Our Chief Engineer has 30-years of international experience, spread across the entire globe.
Steve hails from a geological background. At an early career stage, he transcended to engineering roles culminating at a managerial level. Steve brings relevant experience across most basin types including:
- Subnormal and depleted through HPHT.
- Legacy brownfield redevelopments through wildcat exploration.
- Oil, condensate and gas.
- Clastic and carbonates.
- Soft through very hard & abrasive formations.
Drilling engineering is very often a broad-brush subject. There can be an underlying assumption that a Drilling Engineer should be able to perform a role in any given basin and that they possess fully transferable skill sets. To an extent, we agree, especially in an environment where other team members have local basin experience.
Well delivery issues often manifest themselves when entire teams, or specific technologies, are transplanted from one basin to another. Subsequently, it’s realised that geographical, geological and cultural differences are significant. At NatResPro we understand these issues.
We’re firm believers in the process of identifying the circumstances that differentiate one basin from another. NatResPro has been established as a Drilling Engineering Advisory primarily focused on the following categories:
- Managed pressure drilling, (MPD).
- Hydrostatically subnormal drilling practices, including underbalanced drilling (UBD).
- Fractured carbonates and the management of total losses.
- Hard rock environment drilling optimisation.
- Stratigraphically extensive gas reservoirs, including HPHT.
Non-productive time events are often associated with poor technology implementation or a lack of operational preparedness. Managed pressure drilling, for example, is often a technology where integration issues are prevalent. Most experienced industry professionals have witnessed a robust technology fail due to poor integration. We often hear the expression ‘If only we had;
- Engaged with an expert at an earlier stage.
- Avoided locking ourselves into unsuitable long lead inventory.
- Understood the subtle differences at play in our circumstances.
- Considered all the interfaces and restrictions on our rig.
- Taken the time and effort to understand and prepare contingency procedures.
At NatResPro we can provide the know-how associated with the above issues. We’ll assist you in a multitude of practical ways. Our well design solutions range from a simple document peer review, right through to detailed engineering input of drilling programmes or operational guidelines.
